Rise to the challenge of the wilderness.

Detailed Description:

The Back Woods Awakening course is our response to the challenges of backcountry camping such as unpredictable weather,  possible fire-bans or restrictions, dubious water sources and situations where finding your path may not be straight-forward.  We will also cover a few essentials such as how to pack your bag efficiently, what to take with you on a back-country adventure, how to take care of your gear and make any necessary repairs, and a number of techniques for avoiding unwanted animal encounters by practicing responsible wilderness hygiene.

The course content is planned around a hike into a remote location- away from our base camp and training area. You can choose to set-up camp in either a tent or under a basher- whichever you prefer. Expect to carry your gear on your back for approximately 2 km.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Back Country Wildlife in Focus
  • Grizzly Bear Safety
  • Planning and Packing for a Multi-Day Excursion
  • Reading and Interpreting a Topographical Map
  • Making Camp Safely in the Backcountry
  • Fire-lighting Using Glass Lenses
  • Fire-lighting Using Flint and Steel or Carbon Steel Knife
  • Operating a Gas-Burning Camp Stove
  • Personal Hygiene in the Back Country
  • Notions of Distance and Scale
  • Useful Problem-Solving Knots
  • Building A Fire That Will Burn All Night
  • Introduction to Reading the Night Sky
  • Interpreting Weather Patterns
  • Water Treatment Techniques

Prerequisite: Discover Camping (or by challenging the Discover Camping course) or Bashers, Bivis and Bushcraft (or by challenging the Bash, Bivis and Bushcraft course) or Wild Survival (or by challenging the Wild Survival course)

Age Requirements:

  • You must be over 18 years of age to attend this course unaccompanied.
  • Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Each place booked is for one person only, so each course attendee must have their own booking.
  • This course is not suitable for young people under the age of twelve.

Hospitality:

Storing, preparing and cooking food is an integral part of the Discover Camping course content. Therefore, food is included as part of this course fee.

At the beginning of the course, the Quartermaster will issue each participant a food hamper. You will be asked to store the food at your campsite in accordance with the Timeless Journey® Base Camp Food Storage Guidelines. You will be preparing and cooking for your own consumption, under the supervision and guidance of the course leader.

We will provide you with a detailed menu in your booking confirmation. Please let us know in your booking package or feel free to contact the office if you have any special dietary requirements or allergies and we will try our best to accommodate your requests.

At the base camp, we provide fresh fruit, cookies, drinking water, tea and coffee.

On the Back Woods Awakening course, there is a professional night watch provided by Timeless Journey® staff.

Gear:

You are welcome to make, or buy, your own gear. Although we would like to encourage you to be as self-reliant as possible, all gear used by students in the course must meet the safety standards of the Quartermaster. In some cases, it may be wise to contact the Quartermaster if you have any questions or doubts about gear crafting projects you would like to undertake in preparation or if you would like to make substitutions to the items listed on the Standard Clothing and Equipment Checklist (Overnight).

On the Back Woods Awakening course, we will try to help supply you with used gear for rent if you are unable to find, borrow or purchase gear for the course. To ensure a selection and availability of the items you require, please submit the Standard Clothing and Equipment Checklist (Overnight) to the Quartermaster at least two weeks prior to the start of the course.
