Cast Iron Cooking With A Tripod.jpg

Detailed Description:

In the Shelter-Building With Natural Materials course, we don the hat of the carpenter- designing and building large elaborate structures using natural materials found on-site and simple, portable tools such as the bucksaw and bushcraft knife. The first night is spent in your tent, basher or survival shelter. Later in the course, you can transition to a shelter you built yourself!

We will endeavour to make our framework enduring, structurally sound, braced against the wind and water-resistant- learning the necessary knots and studying the production of natural fibre cordage to create a rope that will tie and secure our work together.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Safe Use and Care of the Bow Saw
  • Falling, Limbing and Peeling Small Trees
  • Three Useful Knots For Binding Timbers
  • Making Your Own Bow Drill Set
  • Practicing Fire by Friction
  • Understanding the Solar Path
  • Navigating In The Woods With a Compass
  • Making a Bucksaw
  • Building a Natural Shelter
  • Building a Signal Fire
  • Plant Walk- Natural Fibre Cordage
  • Producing Natural Fibre Cordage in Various Ways

Prerequisite: Bashers, Bivis and Bushcraft (or by challenging the Bashers, Bivis and Bushcraft course) or Wild Survival (or by challenging the Wild Survival course)

You are welcome to make, or buy, your own gear. Although we would like to encourage you to be as self-reliant as possible, all gear used by students in the course must meet the safety standards of the Quartermaster. In some cases, it may be wise to contact the Quartermaster if you have any questions or doubts about gear crafting projects you would like to undertake in preparation or if you would like to make substitutions to the items listed on the Standard Clothing and Equipment Checklist (Overnight).

On the Shelter-Building With Natural Materials course, we will try to help supply you with used gear for rent if you are unable to find, borrow or purchase gear for the course.
