At Timeless Journey, we provide an opportunity for motivated clients to challenge the required prerequisites for courses and adventures. We do this for a variety of reasons:

  • We value independent self-study and personal experience
  • We value the teachings of our colleagues in other institutions and the wisdom of our predecessors- even though it might be different than our own
  • We recognize that social and economic challenges can make it unjustly difficult for some of our clients to complete the prerequisite courses
  • We know that some clients have to travel long distances to attend our courses or have an adventure
  • We do not want our course schedule planning or the availability of prerequisite courses to be a determining factor that could stand in the way of those who might otherwise want to attend a higher-level course or adventure.
  • We don’t want to waste your time, forcing you to take courses you don’t need.

Prerequisite challenges take place on arrival. All potential candidates will be taken aside as a group (*) and given a series of exercises.

You can expect to:

  • Discuss the potential hazards you might encounter on the course or expedition
  • Demonstrate a reasonable understanding and self-assessment of their knowledge and skills
  • Show that they have come properly equipped with everything they need for the course or adventure
  • Show that they can take care of themselves (to the level required by the course or adventure)
  • Demonstrate that they have a reasonable chance of safely completing the course or adventure:
    • sufficient knowledge and skills
    • good mental and physical health
    • adequate physical fitness
  • Prove that they have studied and understood our company’s key safety policies and procedures in discussion with the examiner
  • Demonstrate that they would be able to act responsibly and in accordance with company policy, if ever they became separated from the group

*If you would prefer to have a private assessment of your knowledge and skills, you can make arrangements with the Head Office for a Personal Knowledge and Skills Assessment

A prerequisite challenge, can have several possible outcomes:

  • candidate passes the challenge

In this case, the candidate is reimbursed for the costs of Hiring Additional Support for the course.

  • candidate does not pass the challenge but they are exceptionally allowed to participate in the course or adventure (the additional teaching, training or supervision required to bring the candidate up to the standard of the rest of the group is within the job description and/or capabilities of the adventure guide).

In this case, the candidate is reimbursed for the costs of Hiring Additional Support for the course.

  • candidate does not pass the challenge and is given the opportunity to Hire Additional Support (the amount of teaching, training or supervision required to bring the candidate up to the standard of the rest of the group is beyond the job description and/or capabilities of the adventure guide).

The candidate pays the costs of Hiring Additional Support or the client is given the opportunity to leave.  If they choose to leave, they will be reimbursed for 80% of the tuition and the complete costs of Hiring Additional Support for the course. We keep the 20% deposit to cover the costs of the materials we purchased in anticipation of your attendance.

  • candidate is not allowed to participate in the course or adventure at this time (because we do not have the resources available to meet their needs). Although we have never exercised this option, we reserve the right to use our discretion and experience to protect the safety of the candidate, other members of the group and the instructor/adventure guide.

In this case, the candidate is reimbursed for 80% of the tuition and the complete costs of Hiring Additional Support for the course. We keep the 20% deposit to cover the costs of the materials we purchased in anticipation of your attendance.

N.B.: We will not be held responsible for any additional costs that might have been incurred by the candidate (for example: gear they might have purchased to attend the course or the travel arrangements they have made to arrive at the challenge).
