“You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide
In 2019, Timeless Journey is offering two programs for young people: the Timeless Journey Youth Courses (Ages 11-16) and Timeless Journey® Day Camp Adventures (Ages 5-12). Both programs take place on our campus at the Vallican Whole Community Centre.
Over the course of the summer, Timeless Journey® offers eight afternoon Youth Courses specifically designed for young people ages 11-16:
- Wild Survival (Wilderness Survival)
- Mission Impossible (Expedition Problem-Solving)
- Intro to Bushcraft (Bushcraft)
- Forces of Nature (Physics)
- Wildwood Workshop (Carving and Woodwork)
- The Forager’s Apprentice (Edible Wild Plants)
- The Modern Hunter’s Apprentice (Hunting)
- Great Explorations (Exploration)
The Youth Courses run one day a week, for four weeks in July or August- which provides sufficient time for the group to explore the theme, practice exercises, develop a long term project and yes… get some (fun) homework done.
Schemma 1: July Courses for Youth
Schemma 2: August Courses for Youth
Wild Survival (4 Mondays) • $260.00
How would your favourite teenager deal with a 72 Hour Wilderness Survival situation? Would they have the necessary skills to stay safe and alive until help arrives? The Wild Survival course is designed to give young people an introduction to the fundamental skills needed to survive a 72 hour, unexpected stay in the wilderness. We will build a personalized light-weight, portable Survival Kit for outdoor recreation and learn to use all the components to their full extent.
Mission Impossible (4 Tuesdays) • $250.00
In Mission Impossible, we take a serious look at what can go wrong when people head off on expeditions in the wilderness. Based on the real life stories of experienced guides, the program is an entertaining journey towards self-reliance. We will learn to work together as a group, in harmony with nature to overcome significant obstacles and challenges- helping you achieve more than you ever thought possible. Learn to prevent and deal with some of the most common backcountry disasters…so you never have to experience them in real life!
Intro to Bushcraft (4 Wednesdays) • $240.00
Intro to Bushcraft is all about being and living comfortably in the wilderness- first steps in an inspiring journey. Designed specifically for young people ages 11-16, our program focuses on developing a strong core of self-reliance skills, building self-confidence and independent thinking. Our instructors will accompany you each step of the way- providing expert demonstrations, fun workshops and creative problem-solving adventures that explore the scope of Bushcraft.
Forces of Nature (4 Thursdays) • $260.00
In the Forces of Nature course, young people get to experience first-hand how knowledge can boost one’s power to problem-solve effectively in the outdoors. In a small group, youth take on a series of wacky and fun challenges that involve using the principles of physics (friction, elasticity, projectiles, fluids, pulleys and levers) to make the impossible become possible. Warning: these four amazing days can drastically influence a young person’s attitudes towards physics and turn them into a veritable force of nature!
Wildwood Workshop (4 Mondays) • $280.00
Would you like to make beautiful and useful objects out of wood? In the Wildwood Workshop, young people learn practical woodworking skills like joining, peeling, drilling, bending, carving, whittling and sanding. This hands-on course focuses on the safe use and mastery of hand tools under the supervision of a master carpenter. After working through a series of basic skills as a group, students get to choose from four major projects that they will complete as part of the course.
The Forager’s Apprentice (4 Tuesdays) • $280.00
Being able to find food in the natural environment is a life-skill that used to be part of our basic education. Unfortunately, our society has placed an increasing value on agriculture and technology to provide food for humanity, and the knowledge required to forage for wild foods has gradually left mainstream education. In the Forager’s Apprentice, youth get to reclaim a piece of their human heritage and practice identifying key species (no mushrooms) in the local landscape that are tasty and safe for consumption under the guidance of an adult master forager.
The Modern Hunter’s Apprentice (4 Wednesdays) • $310.00
One-on-one apprenticeship, with a master hunter, is the traditional way to learn to hunt. However, finding an adult today who is willing, qualified and free to mentor a young person through their first hunting season can be challenging. The Modern Hunter’s Apprentice course was designed to provide young people with a pre-season opportunity to acquire the necessary practical skills to stay safe and learn to participate effectively in a modern hunting party with responsible adult hunters.
Great Explorations (4 Thursdays) • $250.00
What does it take to be an explorer? Discovery is as much an attitude as a skill-set. However, if you want to get home again at the end of the day, you will need a better strategy than breadcrumbs. In Great Explorations, we examine the life stories of some of Canada’s early explorers- discovering ancient tools and practicing techniques that were part of their daily lives and adapting them for modern use in our own explorations. You will gain timeless training and unforgettable experiences that will give you confidence to really go places in life.
